When I moved to a small Indiana town in 1978, the apartment I rented was near railroad tracks. For about the first week, I’d awaken each night several times to the sounds of the passing trains. After that my brain adapted and tuned them out. I was able to sleep through without being disturbed.
I forgot to mention-One morning at my first radio job in Illinois a train derailed. In those pre cell phone days, they sent me out into the woods with a remote unit in the predawn hours. There were "itinerant travelers," as I diplomatically termed them, riding in a box car. They were knocked around pretty good. But were not injured.
