The Little Fish
One “doable” that I’m trying to learn about is how to stock a small pond I have. It’s another area about which I know little to nothing. Yes, while I’d like to learn Sanskrit, that probably isn’t going to happen. But I can put a few fish in some water and see what happens.
So I called up the fish company and told the nice lady about my situation. She suggested starting this fall and putting in a small number of Shiners (I had to look up what they are) and Minnows.
In the Spring, her recommendation would be to add some Bluegill and Bass. (I was a little surprised when she asked if I was planning on putting in “trophy Bass.”) “Ahh …no, ” I replied. “Regular old Bass will do.” (Images of Dan Ackroyd’s Bassomatic SNL routine flashed in my head.)
By giving the little fish a head start this fall, that will strengthen their presence when the larger fish come in next March.
New fish in a currently fish-less pond will need to be fed. I’m looking forward to making the daily trek to throw in some fish food, available from our local Tractor Supply store.
On a slightly related topic, I notice that it was 30 years ago today that my home was taken out by a tornado that went through our town. Thankfully, the only fatalities were my 3 goldfish. But it still saddened me at the time to come home and find the 60 gallon tank shattered on the floor. Peggy had taken our small dog and gone to visit her parents earlier in the day. Good thing.
I don’t know if I’ll be fishing this pond. It may be satisfying enough to feed them. We’ll see. Enjoy your weekend.
