Reasonable Expectations
I was able to hear a speech by Gerald Ford during the 76 campaign when he came to Syracuse, New York. My most vivid recollection was when he came into the arena. It actually was a little comical. He was in the center of a moving huddle of Secret Service agents as this group made it’s way to the podium. Ford, a tall man at 6 feet, could be seen waving from the center.
Remember when we were told more recently that we were going to win so much we’d get tired of winning? Life isn’t really like that. As a spectator, if you look only at sports highlight clips, you might think life is one amazing play after another. It isn’t. Most of the time there’s at least a degree of ennui.
I think you might agree that life is difficult at times. Bad times are followed by better times and most of us keep plugging. That’s what we need to do now. Plug along and (sometimes) muddling through is about as good as it gets. But it will get us there. We are in the midst of one of those moments. Reasonably modest expectations will help us endure and, eventually, come out ok.
