Keep Your Expectations Modest In This Unusual Election Year
If you were hoping for an elevated discourse following the events of today, I’d say don’t bet on it.
Of course there were legitimate concerns about President Biden’s cognitive acuity in the wake of his uninspired debate performance. By withdrawing, he removed a central campaign issue.
Assuming Ms Harris is the likely Democratic nominee, I (unfortunately) expect the discourse to become even coarser, if that’s even possible. One can reasonably expect dog whistles related to race and gender.
Lots of folks I’ve spoken with have said, “Are these two guys the best we can do?” This is now an entirely changed dynamic.
Of course, it is quite possible that the Republicans could win back the White House. Keep in mind, however, that an intense effort is underway to dial up the voting motivation of-particularly-one half of the population.
On Sunday the path to a Republican Presidential win became considerably more complicated.
